Youth Fellowship
Week - Coleg y Bala
24-28th July
This bilingual course was very busy and lively
with young people from all over Wales coming to
Coleg y Bala for the week. The course was led by
Siôn with help from Rhun, Gethin, Esyllt and me.
We looked at the Early Church as well as
enjoying lots of activities, worship and
socializing.
Firstly we looked at Jesus' message to the
disciples in John 14, he warns that He will have
to leave them but promises to send an assistant,
the Holy Spirit. Then we looked at the events
during Pentecost - Jesus' promise being
fulfilled and the Spirit falling on the
disciples in a very powerful way. This helped
them to share with the people that were
listening what had happened to Jesus and why he
had to die on the cross. This meant that over
3,000 people repented, asked for forgiveness,
and came to believe in Jesus' resurrection.
Rhun mentioned how we can ask for the Holy
Spirit at any time - to help us to understand
the Bible better, to give assurance in our
hearts and to give us strength during difficult
times.
We had fun in presenting stories from the Book
of Acts in different ways - through series of
pictures, video clips and a puppet shows! One
group looked at the story of Peter and John
healing the beggar, another group on the
religious leaders' response to the Apostles'
miracles, and the third group on Stephen being
Martyred. All the passages we looked at showed
the powerful way God was at work with the
Apostles and how they were prepared to risk
their lives, and to lose it in Stephen's case,
for the sake of Jesus Christ and his Gospel
Something else we studied was the change in
Paul's life as a result of his conversion. He
used to pursue the early Christians very
fiercely but God had plans for him, and Paul
himself became an important teacher and leader
in the Early Church.
As well as the learning, we had lots of
activities to keep us busy as well - a good game
of football in the Leisure Centre, a walk in the
sun around the footpaths of Bala ... but the
activity that remains most in the memory is the
biking trip to Beddgelert. One of the leaders
(which will remain anonymous - don't worry
Gethin) went missing on the mountains. But this
wasn't all bad because it developed to be a
parable that showed that Jesus is the only way
to Life and that every other path, except Him,
takes us the wrong way.
It was great to see youngsters of different
backgrounds, Welsh and English-speaking, getting
along so naturally together and having a great
time while learning about the Gospel.
