What is it?
Coleg y Bala GAPYEAR is a 1 year (September-August) practical discipleship course based at Coleg y Bala.
Who are WE?
Coleg y Bala is a Centre for Children and Young People owned by the Presbyterian Church of Wales. Our ultimate objective at Coleg y Bala is to remind people of all ages of the need for a personal faith in Jesus Christ.
The GAP YEAR aims to:
- Inspire personal and spiritual growth – Encourage the further development of Christ-like character – Help each student discover and develop their gifts and potential – Develop effective leadership, communication and teamwork skills – Help each student gain insight into possible avenues for their future service
WHO is it for?
The GAP YEAR will be ideal for school and university leavers who wish to take a year out to consider their future vocation, as well as individuals who would benefit from a career break for the same reason. Ultimately, the GAP YEAR is for anyone who wants to deepen and develop their effectiveness in Christian service.
What will I be DOING?
Students on this bilingual and interdenominational course will experience and be actively involved in the many varied aspects of Coleg y Bala’s work. This includes: – Presenting the Christian faith in a contemporary and relevant way to children and young people at the Centre and in local schools and churches – Training in Health and Safety, Food Hygiene and First Aid – Assisting in the general administration, domestic upkeep and practical maintenance of the Centre – Supporting and leading local based Christian youth and children’s work – Involvement in the mid-week adult Alpha or other Bible based courses – Being trained in Child Protection issues – Involvement in a variety of outdoor pursuits – Participating in and leading the daily worship of the Centre – Being a member of a close-knit family community at the Centre Whilst gaining practical skills and experience, each student will also spend 1 day a week following an academic course at the University of Wales, Bangor. Students will follow the ‘Introduction to Christian Youth Studies’ course in the first semester, and will choose whether to study basic Christian doctrine, Church History or Theology and Contemporary Culture in the second semester.
Accountability
The student will be accountable to the Director and will receive regular formal guidance in meetings with a permanent member of staff.
How much will it COST?
